As a web designer and overall fan of Wordpress I have a LOT of experience troubleshooting issues with the software but I had one today that stumped me.
The hosting company that I was working with had turned off Automatic Updates (why, oh why??) so I decided to update manually.
I have done this many times without issue, but this time I ended up with an error. The error said:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘global’ (T_GLOBAL) in …/comment-template.php on line 435.
It was a core WordPress file and I had used it before so I knew that it wasn’t actually an issue with the file itself.
After much hair-pulling, I discovered that it was because I used my FTP software in Auto mode and it should have been in Binary mode (I have never changed this setting before…but for this hosting company it caused a problem!!) Once I re-uploaded the files in Binary mode everything was fine.
